  • Don't sweep or deposit litter in any street, public park, alley, sidewalk, lot, bodies of water or embankments.
  • Residents must see that sidewalks and gutter areas extending 24 inches into the street from curbside in front of properties are kept free of debris including litter.
  • Garbage cans should be in an enclosed or screened area, keeping them out of public view from the street or sidewalk.
  • If you notice a litter violation in New Brunswick, please call the Division of Inspections at (732)745-5075 or (732)745-5079, or contact the Health Department at (732) 745-5021.
  • Recycling is mandatory in the State of New Jersey and at no time are you permitted to place recyclables in the trash. The recycling containers provided by the Middlesex County Improvement Authority (MCIA), 1-800-488-MCIA, are for the specified recyclable material indicated only. If trash is placed in your recycling container it will not be collected. Collection of recyclable material will take place between 6:00pm and 6:00pm. Recyclable material should be placed curbside after 5:00pm the night before or by 6:00am on the morning of the scheduled collection day. Plastic bags CANNOT be used as recycling containers. No container may weigh more than 50 lbs. or be larger than 32 gallons. Residents MUST call 1-800-488-MCIA to arrange for the collection of bulk items or additional solid waste material.
