Rutgers Off-Campus Housing Service strongly encourages all tenants to rent only those spaces that are in full compliance with municipality codes and regulations. Tenants should always assess security measures (deadbolts, keyed window locks, outside lights) and fire safety precautions (fire extinguishers, smoke detectors, and sprinkler systems) before signing a lease.

GUIDE TO LIVING OFF-CAMPUS DISCLAIMER

Welcome to the Rutgers University Off-Campus Housing Service's Guide to Living Off-Campus. This document is designed to benefit tenants as well as landlords and sublettors.

If you are a first-time renter, a first-time landlord, or a newcomer to our area, you should take the time to read this guide. These documents provide an overview of various aspects of living off-campus. The guide touches on many crucial topics such as security deposits, leases, area info, inspecting your rental, roommate conflicts, and legal resources.

This is only a guide and is not meant to render legal advice or to replace the services of an attorney. The Guide is based on current Federal, State, and local laws, ordinances, regulations and court cases. It is not a complete summary of all laws and court decisions that concern landlord-tenant relations. If you plan to take any legal action in a landlord-tenant dispute, you should consult with the appropriate enforcing agency, a county legal services agency, a private attorney, an owners' organization, or a tenants' organization.

The Rutgers Off-Campus Housing Service is dedicated to providing programs and services to all students who live off-campus. We aim to assist them in connecting to the university and making a positive impact on their off-campus living experience.
