Rutgers Off-Campus Housing Service strongly encourages all tenants to rent only those spaces that are in full compliance with municipality codes and regulations. Tenants should always assess security measures (deadbolts, keyed window locks, outside lights) and fire safety precautions (fire extinguishers, smoke detectors, and sprinkler systems) before signing a lease.

Oil Heat
If you have oil heat, it is likely that your landlord chose and made a contract with the company that provides your oil. Generally, this works best for all parties because the landlord, especially one who owns several properties, can normally get a better rate from an oil company based on volume than an individual tenant could negotiate. It may be possible that you are paying higher rates than are necessary. If this happens, call a variety of oil companies and draw up list of the estimates you obtained. Speak with your landlord about what you have discovered and what can be done about switching companies. Your landlord may not be able to change immediately if s/he has a contract with a particular company for certain period of time. Oil Distributers Serving All of New Jersey:
