Halloween Safety Tips
- If you go to a party, go with a group of friends you know and trust and leave the party together.
- Use caution if you choose to drink. Drinking alcoholic concoctions can be dangerous since the alcohol content can vary widely and sweetened beverages can hide the taste of liquor. Never leave a drink unattended.
- Never leave a friend alone, especially if impaired, and do not hesitate to call 911 if medical attention is needed. Students will not face reprisal for seeking help.
- Always carry a photo ID and a cellphone and make sure your friends do the same in case you become incapacitated for any reason.
- Consider your costume and avoid wearing one that does not allow you to see and move freely. Stop and make sure motorists see you before you cross the street. Be sure the material isn’t flammable (and don’t burn candles at gatherings - use flameless ones).
- Some people with harmful intentions may take advantage of being unrecognizable in a Halloween costume. Stay in an environment where you can easily get help or move away from someone who is threatening your safety. Be aware of your surroundings.
- If you need a ride home, call Security Escort Services: The Rutgers Police Department provides security escorts to students, faculty, and staff upon request. The security escorts, primarily walking, provide our community with personalized service to their vehicles, campus residence, or the University’s mass transit system. The services can be initiated by calling the RUPD non-emergency number at 732.932.7211. Security escorts may not be “reserved” in advance.
- Medical Amnesty will be granted to both the intoxicated student and to the student seeking medical assistance for intoxicated student.
- Medical Amnesty: If you or another person drink too much or have a bad reaction to any drug, call 911. There will be no recorded violations.
