Tenants’ Rights Handbook

Tenants’ Rights in New Jersey is LSNJ’s guide to landlord-tenant law for New Jersey residents. The manual includes chapters on finding a place to live, security deposits, leases, rent increases, the responsibilities of landlords and tenants, legal and illegal evictions, condo and co-op conversions, and the right to safe and decent housing.

Legal Services of New Jersey (LSNJ)

LSNJ is an independent, nonprofit organization that coordinates the statewide Legal Services system. LSNJ strives to ensure equal access to justice under law to all people of New Jersey, providing free legal assistance to low-income people in civil matters. The site provides electronic texts and links to other resources.

Rutgers University Student Legal Services (RUSLS)

The RUSLS provides legal advice and assistance on a wide range of legal issues. RUSLS attorneys attempt to assist students in resolving their issues prior to going to court, as well as providing referral assistance to attorneys who specialize or concentrate in all areas of practice.

Housing Coalition

As part of the Puerto Rican Action Board, the Housing Coalition is a private, nonprofit organization that offers landlord-tenant counseling, fair housing counseling, and other services.

New Jersey Tenants Organization (NJTO)

The New Jersey Tenants Organization is the oldest and largest statewide organization in the United States. Since 1969, the NJTO has worked for the enactment of 18 major landlord-tenant laws. A membership fee is required.

The New Jersey State Bar Foundation helps the public connect to legal resources and programs.

A lawyer referral service is available through the New Jersey State Bar Association through each county bar association.
